The founder

Luis Díez-Picazo has been one of the greatest authorities in private law in the XX century in Spain. Along his life he balanced his passion for teaching and academic research with practising the Law as counsel and as arbitrator.

Luis Díez-Picazo was Chair Professor of Civil Law at the Universities of Santiago de Compostela, Valencia and Autónoma of Madrid, consecutively. He was also author of numerous reputed books, among others the influential Studies of Civil Case Law, Basis of Civil Law, Tort Law and System of Civil Law (co-authored with Chair Professor Antonio Gullón Ballesteros), as well as many articles and other publications.

Luis Díez-Picazo was President of the Spanish Royal Academy of Legislation and Jurisprudence and he was awarded honorary doctorate by many national and international universities; he was Justice at the first Spanish Constitutional Court during transition to democracy; President of the Civil Law Section at the General Commission of Codification of the Ministry of Justice; Counsellor at the Spanish Central Bank and Counsellor at the Council of State.

Lastly, he was honoured with the Medal of the Order of the Constitutional Merit; the Great Cross of Isabel La Católica; the Great Cross of San Raimundo de Peñafort, and the Great Cross of Alfonso X el Sabio.
